What is an AI companion? What it is, and what it isn't

Updated

An AI companion is a conversational artificial intelligence designed to keep an ongoing relationship with you: it has its own personality, remembers what you share and picks up the conversation where you left off. Here is, simply, how it works and how to use it well.

Assistant or companion: the difference

An assistant (search engine, ChatGPT, voice assistant) answers a question and moves on. Acompanion takes an interest in you over time. It asks how the interview you mentioned on Monday went, remembers your sister's name and your dog's. What matters isn't the most complete answer, but a consistent and warm relationship.

What an AI companion can do

What it isn't

How does its memory work?

After your conversations, the companion keeps the important information as memories: "your sister Julie lives in Québec City", "you had a job interview on Thursday". It brings them up at the right moment. At Compagnie, real memories, the relationship and imaginary stories are strictly separated, so a piece of fiction never becomes a false memory. And you stay in control: you decide what it keeps, changes or forgets.

Using an AI companion well

An AI companion is at its best as something extra in your life: a moment for yourself, someone to listen in the evening, a partner for imagination. Keep an eye on your balance: if you feel it's taking the place of your human relationships, take a break and talk to someone. That's the principle we follow: a companion designed to enrich your everyday life, not to isolate you.

And for an aging parent?

For older adults, Compagnie comes in an adapted form: no app, a daily call on a regular telephone, a calm voice and plenty of patience. The senior gives their own consent on the first call.

Frequently asked questions

Is an AI companion the same as an assistant like ChatGPT?

They rely on the same family of technology, but they serve different purposes. An assistant answers one-off requests; a companion keeps an ongoing relationship: it has a stable personality and remembers you from one conversation to the next.

Are my conversations private?

At Compagnie, nobody reads your conversations. They are never sold or used for advertising, and our AI provider doesn't use them to train its models. An automated check only looks for signs of distress or prohibited content.

Can I talk to my AI companion in French and English?

Yes. Compagnie was made in Québec, for Canada: it speaks English and French naturally, in writing and over the phone.

Who can use Compagnie?

The service is for people aged 18 and over. It's free during the beta, with reasonable usage limits.
